The lines in this piece act as contour lines because the brain has a lot of grooves and divetts and folds, so the little lines show all those little details, or contours if you will.

line as direction
The lines in this image show obvious direction because they connect in a way to look like a wave or a waterfall, giving the illusion of direction.
Line as shape
This image contains the shape of a heart and 2 people, which is just done with lines. This is basically an outline, but thats all line as shape is.
